Two Bosses Enter: Mage-Lord Urom vs. Xevozz

Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW Insider’s series of fantasy death matches. This season’s bosses come from the five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King. Here’s an annoying pair who deserve each other: Mage-Lord Urom of the Oculus versus Xevozz of the Violet Hold. Yes, I admit it — when my husband IMs me from his office in frustration over the latest twist in corporate politics, I take a certain twisted pleasure in replying, “No worries – I just sent Xevozz and his stupid spheres up against Urom the bloody platform-hopper.” Ahhh … Takes the edge right off. So let’s start with the ground rules. Assume that these foes share similar levels, health pools and a comparative overall damage output. Of course, we’ll allow Xevozz to be able to “follow” Urom from platform to platform (we’ll leave the details to your imagination). Don’t get caught up in game mechanics and what actual

WoW Insider Show live this evening on Ustream at a special time

Our weekly podcast is broadcasting a special midweek edition this evening — tonight at 6pm Eastern (so you’ve got time to listen in before the big Lost finale), we’ll be over on the Ustream page doing what we always do: talking about the most popular post of the week. Our good friends and colleagues Amanda Dean and Lesley Smith will be on the show, and Turpster will probably make an appearance as well (given that we can convince him to stay up late enough). We’ll be chatting about the latest PTR patch notes, the big changes coming to Wintergrasp, and what Blizzard legal has been up to lately (with both iPhone apps and webcomics). Plus, we’ll answer your emails — you can send us questions, comments, or insights at theshow@wowinsider.com. Should be fun. Head on over to our Ustream page at Thursday, May 14 at 6:00 AM in your time zone (GMT+8) to listen in live, or just step behind the break on this post to find an embedded feed. And if you

PTR patch 3.1.2 build 9889: Juggernaut, Auriya’s cats nerfed

A small new build was pushed to the patch 3.1.2 PTR today. The majority of the changes were relatively minor, but one is headline-worthy: the Arms Warrior talent Juggernaut now gives your next Slam or Mortal Strike an additional 25% chance to critically hit if used within 10 sec, down from 100% chance. Forum posters have been asking for a Juggernaut nerf quite vocally recently; they ought to be pleased with this one. Warriors also got a second small nerf: the Glyph of Rapid Charge is being changed from a 20% cooldown reduction (3 seconds) to a 7% reduction (1 second). Other changes included some small tweaks to the Ulduar encounters Iron Council and General Vezax. Auriya’s cats took a good hit from the nerf bat, with the damage from their Savage Pounce ability being cut in half. Finally, Priests’ Divine Hymn, which was completely reworked in patch 3.1, had its bonus healing to affected targets nerfed from 15% to 10%; I never use the spell, so I don’t much care.

Breakfast Topic: Mothers’ Day edition

I know you’re out there! WoW moms, like me, getting your Azeroth fix in when not making meals, reading stories and otherwise performing all of your maternal duties. Hopefully you are enjoying a nice sleep-in right now, maybe some breakfast in bed. May your day be filled with flowers, candy, jewelry and/or clay-blobs that are supposed to be frogs, hearts or whatever they are making these days instead of ashtrays. Enjoy your day and I know you’ll make sure your mom is appreciated today, too. To all you non-maternal Azerothians: after taking care of orphans for a week, or subjecting them to atrocities, whichever… perhaps you have more of an appreciation of what motherhood is about? Or not. But still, today is the day to show your mom that you appreciate her (or remember her fondly if she is no longer with us). Even if she isn’t the greatest, she is still responsible for your existence, if not your monthly payment to Blizzard. So, give a call/flowers/chocolates

The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Weapons from Ulduar

Ulduar has brought over 800 items within our grasp. While toying with specs (I’m actually raiding switching between arms and fury depending on the fight, although last night I actually tanked clearing up to Vezax) to try and squeeze the most wow goldDPS out I find myself wearing the half-and-hald set you always get when content is progressing. Naxxramas gear tends towards a screaming skulls motif while Ulduar gear has a more construct simulating appearance. As you can see in the screen shot, I’ve ended up looking somewhat like the gothiest Power Ranger ever. I don’t mind the look myself, although I know some people really do. Then again, as I’ve said many, many times, I’d wear the Conqueror’s Clownshoe Raiment if the stats were right. This week we’re going to discuss the weapon drops for warriors in Ulduar – 10 and 25. This basically means tanking 1handers and 2 hand weapons. While I personally love fist weapons myself, The Masticator

Totem Talk: Patch 3.1 Shaman Gear Part 4

One of the interesting things about new content is the transitional period as you clear the new bosses and start gearing up. Pictured alongside today’s column is an illustration of that process, as Tier 7 blends into Tier 8 and Calamity’s Grasp is paired with Vulmir. Myself, I’ve mostly been screaming “Why won’t you drop” again, as I so often do (I have terrible loot luck) at various healing rings, trinkets, necks, and shields. Having recently healed my first 25 man since I switched from resto to elemental in SSC, I’ve also found that I hate spirit with a passion. Why there has been no effort to make spirit more useful for shamans as casters or healers, I can’t tell you, because it’s on every freaking thing. Yes, it helps on mana regeneration out of combat and if you can take five seconds in combat, but otherwise it’s totally useless for shamans. Doesn’t increase spell power or crit or do anything, really, just sits

Val’anyr explained

In an unusual move, Blizzard has spelled out exactly how the proc on Val’anyr, Hammer of the Ancient Kings works. There are probably one or two of you who consider it a spoiler, so I’ll put it after the cut. First, he notes that it is the proc that makes the item legendary, given that its stats are on par for epics of its ilvl. Here is precisely what that lovely proc does: There is a 10% chance whenever healing is wow golddone by one of your HoTs or direct heals for you to gain a buff called Blessing of Ancient Kings for 15 seconds. This has a 45 second internal cooldown. Heals that are entirely overheal – such as HoTs ticking on a full-health target – do not have a chance to proc the Blessing. The Blessing causes all of your heals (for the 15 seconds that the buff is up) to put a shield on anyone you heal absorbing 15% of the amount healed for 8 seconds. This shield stacks with itself, will proc from HoT ticks that occur after you gain the Blessing, and includes
