WoW Moviewatch: Spacebar Clown

Today’s video is Spacebar Clown by TheGreyFoo. You might remember the creator from The Pally DPS Song. Spacebar Clown has a kind of a bonus video, in that it comes across as two videos in one. You have the first opening clip as a homage to the old 8-bit style video games, and then you have the full parody song afterward. I absolutely loved the 8-bit opening. Not only was rendering Arthas in this fashion absolute genius, it was a nice little call out to the early roots of MMORPGs. It might sometimes seem tough to remember the old turn-based attack selection menus, but it still has a fun, historical feel to it. The parody song is nearly as much fun, though. As one of those folks who just can’t help spamming jump while waiting for a group to get together, it brought a warm feeling to the cockles of my heart. While not everyone knows the joys of their spacebar, I think there’s at least more than a few night elves out there who this video will have jumping for joy.

WoW Moviewatch: The Worgen

Most machinima videos tend to clock in around 2 or 3 minutes, with even the story-driven movies reaching maybe 5 minutes on average. It takes a lot of work to film and render even a single minute of footage, which usually makes the shorter movies more manageable and effective. So, it was with a certain amount of curiosity that I fired up The Worgen for the first time. The Worgen was created by Alexander Egeskog with the help of about a half-dozen people. The ultimate question for a movie like this is “Does the script and acting justify the longer film?” In my mind, I think it absolutely does. While some of the pacing could probably have been a little faster, I think the framework of the story sets up compelling reasons for a longer, more detailed approach to the film. Since the narrative is relayed from a father to a son, a certain amount of meandering and epic pacing is appropriate. Ultimately, The Worgen was an engaging film to watch. I’m curious see what you

Around Azeroth: Totemic explosion

How many old-school Horde players used to use the “forest of totems” strategy on the trash packs in Blackwing Lair? Draenei shaman Vhaelor of <Deux Ex Machina> on Destromath missed out on this experience, being Alliance and all, so he decided to recreate it in the Stormwind castle. Unfortunately, Vhaelor himself couldn’t see his mighty forest, so it was up to his friends to inform him of this bug. His pal Whitepaws snapped this photo and sent it in to us. Thanks, guys! Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We’d love to see them on Around Azeroth! WoW Moviewatch: Wrath of the Lich King, Casino Royale Style

The Ancient Gaming Noob picked up this awesome trailer for Icecrown Citadel, created originally by Kesudor. The title of this piece is Wrath of the Lich King, Casino Royale Style. If you’re a fan of the James Bond movies, there’s no way you can miss the obvious homage to those distinctive, elegant opening credits. Two things in particular stood out to me as clever takes on the style. First, the heavy use of Frostmourne as an iconic image mirrors the use of a gun in the James Bond trailers. Displaying a weapon in this kind of trailer gives the audience a sense of menace, and helps cement what genre the movie lives in. The second clever touch was the cut-aways between Sylvanas and Blood-Queen Lana’thel. As you watch the video, there’s a still image of Sylvanas staring out at the audience. Small bits of glass float by the Dark Lady. When the glass is over her face, you instead see Lana’thel. It’s hard to tell what plot elements might be implied by

WoW Moviewatch: Ballad of the Green Beret

The Ballad of the Green Beret has been one of my favorite songs since childhood. I’ve always been enthralled by song’s epic poetry and steadfast resolve of its descriptions. When I saw ThreePipeProblem’s World of Warcraft video take on the song, I instantly fell in love. While this piece features the same music that we all know, the creator used the backdrop of Azeroth to create a music video for the ballad. The video actually does a surprisingly good job of translating the themes and emotions of the original song into the Azeroth universe. ThreePipeProblem used a lot of great Wrath of the Lich King imagery that speaks to ideas like dedication and bravery. Even the shots of Shattrath convey a wonderful martial, patriotic feel. This video is likely to sit in my Favorites folder for a long time.

WoW Moviewatch: GreatFather Winter

‘Tis the season to start revelling in the glory of Winter’s Veil. To help create some classic music for us all to enjoy during the holiday, Cranius wrote and produced GreatFather Winter. While this video was originally created a year ago, it remains fresh and vibrant even today. I think that Cranius nailed his goal perfectly. Cranius has a nice story about the final creation of this film. There were fierce snow storms where Cranius lives. He obviously wanted to get his Winter’s Veil classic complete by Christmas, but was very concerned about losing power due to the snow. He was rightly concerned, as his electricity went out just as he was near finished. But, thankfully, it turned out to be a very short outage — he was without power just long enough to get a few more inspirations for some final tweaks. Let the holiday season begin!

Blizzard orders up a dessert contest

Neth has posted an announcement for Blizzard’s annual dessert contest, and… wait, dessert contest? I don’t remember them doing that one before, but sure enough, they have. I guess it follows after the pumpkin carving contest. Anyway, yes, your task, should you choose to accept it, is to make a confectionary creation based on one of Blizzard’s big franchises, and submit a picture of it to them over on the site. Each of ten winners will get seven different Warcraft books, including the popular Rise of the Horde and Arthas novels. You have until December 21st at midnight, so get cooking! And if you do make a nice Warcraft cake, be sure to send us a copy (if the rules allow), so we can add it to our gallery below. Good luck to everyone who enters the contest, we can’t wait to see what kind of sweets you cook up.

Last week of Hearts, Hands and Voices

Azeroth United, the internet media community for all things World of Warcraft, has been holding a charity drive for Child’s Play since November 1st. Hearts, Hands, and Voices has already surpassed their initial goal of $5000 and is now hoping to reach twice that by their end date of December 13th. Sunday, our very own Mike Schramm played Rock Band for 9 hours — until his fingers hurt — to raise money for the drive. Also, you can blame Syrana for all your troubles on Twitter and help raise money for the charity, just by tweeting. If you wish to join in on the fun and support this Penny Arcade-run charity, please donate by clicking on the ChipIn link at the main HHV site, or any of the supporting sites. ChipIn was the same service that the WoWathon players used to also raise money for the hospitalized children who are the recipients of Child’s Play’s funds, toys, games, etc. The donations from this service go directly to the charity.
